What you should hold and retain are the energies you have just absorbed.
This is whats known as grounding and should be done after almost every med session.
Grounding can be done by yoga.

Based on the color you choose to work in it is helpful to use a mudra for the chakra that rules that color.

Why would you hold your breath? It could make the meditation less effective because less oxigen to the brain? isn't it so? Just breathe, no need to stop breathing in those meditations.
