Once again, I succeed in making you open this thread by all-caps'ing my subject.

The superior power of manasic japa is ever so stressed as it endlessly recurs in several scriptures.
The benefits of silent chanting are proclaimed throughout the ancient scriptures
Upamsu-japa (soft whispering, inaudible to others) gives a reward one thousand times more than Vaikhan-japa (verbal or loud enough to be heard by others; not shouting). However, manasic-japa (silent mental chanting) gives a reward tea million times more than loud chanting.
In the digdarsini tika to Hari-bhakti-vildsa, Sri Sanatana Gosvami says:
<blockquote"There are three types of japa; out loud, murmuring, and silently within the mind, meditating on the holy names one after another. Murmuring is one hundred times better than loudly chanting japa. Chanting in the mind is one-thousand times better than out loud."</blockquote
HOWEVER, reading further through the website (which I suggest you do, too, in order to have a just take on this subject)....
"If silent chanting (manasic-japa) is so incredibly powerful and beneficial, why do contemporary gurus advise their disciples to chant softly (upamsu-japa) or loudly (yaikhari-japa)?"
The answer to this question comes from the life and teachings of Haridasa Thakura, who is the Namacarya for all Gaudiya Vaisnavas. Of the 192 rounds of japa that Thakura Haridasa chanted everyday, it is said he chanted 64 in the mind, 64 whispering, and 64 loudly.
Five hundred years ago in Navadvipa, the local smarta brahmanas criticized Haridasa Thakura for chanting japa loudly.
They said: "Haridasa, why must you chant so loudly? The actual injunction is to chant softly in your mind. Which scripture instructs you to chant loudly?"
Srila Haridasa humbly replied: "The principle effect of chanting the name of God loudly is that it purifies the soul one thousand times more than any other form of worship. Nowhere in the scriptures is loud chanting of the holy name condemned; on the contrary, there are excellent benefits that have been described in many places. In one scripture it says: 'Loud chanting of Lord Krsna's name is a thousand times better than silent chanting.'"
''Why is the result of loud chanting magnified a thousand times over any other process?" demanded a dubious brahmana.
Haridasa replied: "O brahmana, please try to understand that when any living entity, be it man, bird or beast, hears the holy name chanted by a pure devotee, he goes directly to Vaikuntha after leaving this body. Srimad Bhdgavatam 10.34.17 says, 'O Acyuta, anyone who chants Your name purifies all who hear his chanting, as well as himself. One who chants the holy name to himself liberates himself only, but one who chants the Lord's name loudly liberates anyone who hears him. The sound of the Lord's name is beneficial for everyone.'"
Haridasa Thakura continued, 'Therefore, all scriptures assert that loud chanting of the Lord's name is a thousand times more effective than any other religious process.
Before stating my ideas, here is a brief glossary:
* shamanic magick = magick that focuses on the self
* sorcery = magick that focuses on others/one's environment
* vaikhan = loud japa
* manasic = silent japa in the mind only
My comments && points on mantra and magick:
* Vaikhan japa is said to be weaker than manasic japa. I think it's because the energy from the vaikhan japa is spread out, instead of concentrated on the self in.
* However, it may be that vaikhan is more effective for magic than manasic - because vaikhan affects the ENVIRONMENT, creating change to suit the desire of the magician.
* To further contribute to the validity of this point, I personally believe that vaikhan may be more powerful in magickal workings because the mantra itself is ALREADY A PHYSICAL MANIFESTATION of divine energy - remember that magicians seek to cause the physical manifestation of their desire by doing magic.
* Another thing is that vaikhan japa manifests on all levels of existence - physical, mental and astral - making it most suitable for magic.
* On this same point, it may also be that vaikhan is purposed more for self-development than magic.
&&
* Though, to contradict the above points: following the idea that vaikhan and manasic are equally powerful it's just that vaikhan is evenly spread between the dimensions - the fact that manasic is extremely powerful and concentrated compared to vaikhan could make it manifest results better.
* Also, the physical and mystical dimensions are inseparable, therefore making manasic not only more energetically powerful than vaikhan, but also more effective in magickal workings.
Oh, I should stop.
I'm already beginning to confuse myself.
Mercury must truly be in retrogade.
