Hi! I have been studying Satanism for a few years now and have recently (within the past year) gotten my first tarot deck. I have found that I seem to have a natural knack for reading the cards, and have successfully done a few readings for family and friends.
I have a question, or rather, a concern.
I was told by my friend that doing my own reading (a reading about myself) was bad karma and it would come back on me VERY badly in the future. Is this true?
Thanks,
Sarah

About Tarot
first, as a JOS member, karma is BS so erase that for your mind now, i have proved it so! it only works when you want it to, out of self guilt, but if you have nothing to be guilty of, then why worry!? you have done no wrong and messing with tarot has nothing to do with Karma.
now, and I'm going to tell you were I'm coming from,
I'm a tarot reader and had a surprising skill for it in the beginning as well. i later have been learning from my tarot teacher(who is my aunt)ever since. she is vary good at it, she even for-toled of my coming to my mother.
ok, your friend has a point. unless you are true to your self its not seen as "good practice" for tarot readers to read them selves, not cause of anything bad but cause you are more likely to read what you want to read and not look at the cards for what they are. so if you want to know a "yes or no" question and you really want a "yes" but it reads "no" you may pass it off as a "yes" just cause you wanted it.
even my highly skilled aunt lets me for-tell her cards.
anyway... hope that clears everything, and just to add here is a really neat video i found about tarots
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PlIPqks0Tmw
and remember "karma is for pussies!" so lead with confidence and with out regret!

All that 'karma' crap is new age bullshit used to try to control your mind. I have been reading the Tarot for some 35 years. I learned to read the Tarot by reading the cards for myself. My suggestion to anyone who wants to learn the Tarot is to read for yourself and to keep a journal of your readings, the accuracy and the outcome of the cards in reality.
When I am facing a dillema or whatever, I usually read my cards. They have helped me very much by seeing the possible future. Unlike astrological influences, the Tarot reveals the POSSIBLE future of where you are going if you continue on in your actions. My own experiences have been when doing a reading with the Tarot for myself, I saw the potential outcome of a situation if I did nothing to avoid it. I changed the outcome by knowing this.
Astrology though is different. Bad transits, progressions, etc., the bad energy manifests in some way anyway. In contrast, much of what we see in the Tarot can be altered by knowing beforehand.

Sarah,
There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with reading for yourself.
Whoever told you this is absolutely FULL OF IT.
Make the Tarot deck your own...the more you use it, the better you will be...and you will charge the cards with your energy.
Bless them in the name of your guardian, or Satan himself.
Cleanse them by imagining blue light around them and through them.
Make them part of you.
Now, reading for friends and family is not a way to truly train yourself.
The reason being is that you KNOW your friends and family....you know their lives, their desires and dislikes, you know what they are about. (usually).
You need to practice on those you do not know very well.
Or even people you "just meet".
...then you can truly learn to let them speak to you...(the cards).
I used to use the cards alot of the time, but I have put them down since before the birth of my 2nd daughter this year. I am going to use them again soon, cuz they have been "calling me".
There have been times when I had to put my deck down, as the cards were "using me".... I became obsessed with a certain subject, and then I use them over and over....
Its good to take a break now and then.
But the cards are calling me...
Anyway...Sarah, if you see something negative or frightening in the cards when you read for others...do NOT startle them, or alarm your client as this can confuse the situation for everyone. You need to stay grounded and firm in your concentration.
Just tell them to " be careful of this or that ".... a warning.
REMEMBER THE CARDS DO NOT SEAL OUR FATE. WE MAKE OUR OWN DECISIONS.
Emphasize this when you read for someone.
THANK THE GODS OR GUARDIANS AFTER THE READINGS WHEN YOU ARE DONE.
I think you will do very well Sarah.

That's bullshit. The reason it was considered taboo to read one's own fortune is that the majority of the population lacks the objectivity to honestly interpret their own future. If you feel you are a rational, objective person then go ahead read your own fortune. However, keep in mind the temptation to read what you want your future to be rather than what your future holds.

First of all, Sarah, Karma is not a Satanic concept. It is merely a ploy to get people to act a certain way. As Satanists, we don't have time for such a silly concept. There are no tabs or tallies being kept of what you do, and nothing is going to come back on you tree fold unless someone else takes the initiative to "make you pay for your wrongs." Also, the idea that you should not do readings on yourself is more of a Christianize idea, and leaves your idea of your 'fate' in the hands of another. Again, a ploy to keep us week. Just ignore what your friend said, and go about your business; you won't even have to worry about one of those pesky karma spells some witches dish out for 'bad behavior.'

I have to agree with HP Pythia. I have been reading cards for over 25 years (my Mom bought me my first Rider deck, LOL) and there is really no way to learn unless you read for yourself and chart your hits and misses. Also as someone who has done it semi-professionally (as an adjunct to regular work) it is important to read for yourself because you begin to learn how you LIE to yourself.
That's right. We all lie to ourselves at times, and taking the time to reflect on an incident (which is what the cards are about)we can discover how and when we are prone to doing that, and by that knowledge, can tell when clients are lying to themselves and to us. Don't forget physical clues like body language, and the words people use. It all comes together in a good reading.
When I did psychic fairs, I could usually figure out when someone wanted a Carnival reading ("You will get a message soon" and that kind of BS) from someone who wanted real work done.
Most people want to be absolved of responsibility for what they have done in their lives, or be told that it isn't their fault. That's a Carny reading; people who want the truth are often shocked by what they hear, and they don't like it. Tarot has been good for me because I am visual and that's how my faculty works. It's like palmistry (someone here was asking about it) and the best palm readers I know find the lines on the hand secondary - they go by the 'jolt' they get from holding that hand.
Astrology - I have studied it, spent bucks on a TI scientific calculator (back in the day) but it was never my thing. HP Pythia is a master at it (I have had stunningly accurate readings from her)it's just not my thing. Luckily, there are all kinds of divination devices out there. The bottom line is to record successes and failures, and see if you are doing something more than being vague and duplicitous. Record keeping is essential, and really easy with computers, as opposed to when we had to WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN!
I love technology - Hail Satan for that!

Thanks,
Sarah

Sarah,
There's absolutely NOTHING wrong with reading for yourself.
