It can be used for the purpose you have laid out. Best to know what you are doing about this, though.

One time my aura was engulfed in black flames, and I am still alive. I didn’t feel anything bad, and well, I was able to see the flames, which should be a good sign by itself.

That's too advanced. At most you could use black "fire" to put out real fire.

To start a fire visualization is pointless, you have to feel the inner heat and apply it with extreme amounts of will and forcing it in a ideational "atom", "point" of the object. Start expanding the middle nadi to feel heat, then open your palms chakra.

After a point of advancement, does not take too much time, you should will energy in your hands and start feeling heat, then extreme heat.

After that point you can use the element fire coupled with the hands to direct and focus this in objects.

You can also train with elemental fire by placing a cold cup of water and infuse it with fire. You should become able enough in a couple of minutes to raise the degree noticeably.

The rest is personal approach and pure training and of course secrecy of implied techniques that you'll discover.
