Invoke the element and proceed with the spell. The use of elements is for advanced people, be careful.

As I understand, invoking a specific element before a specific spell increases the power of the spell. Invoking them before performing the spell is enough.

Yes, but the element invoked must be in line with the purpose you want to achieve.
Each element governs certain things, as explained in ToZ. Your soul has a specific “arrangement” in which each person has predispositions as to where they are most “inclined,” that is, a more pronounced presence of an element, this is visible in one's birth chart. If you have the dominant water element working on issues concerning it will be “easier” than dealing with issues where there is absense of that element.
