Hello everyone,

back in a time when I was going through JoS, Expanding the Sushumna page, I have read something interesting.

Tibetan monks would be tested for initiation by stripping down naked, wrapping themselves in a wet sheet, and spending the night in the freezing mountains, sitting in the snow. In the morning, if the initiate passed the test, the sheet would be bone dry and several feet of snow around the monk would be melted.

From that moment I wanted to hunt down some more informations, especially in form of a video. The one above is one of the few and so far the best I could find. It seems to be both interesting and useful. Interesting because it shows what an experienced meditator is capable of in connection to western science, and useful because, speaking from my experience, it serves good as a proof to other people when I talk about possibilities of meditation - to see it is to believe it.

I think it's also IMPORTANT to add at this point, that anyone watching have to keep in mind that not everything presented in this video is of a satanic origin. Quoting from Satanism's Origins in the Far East:

IMPORTANT! MOST OF THE TEACHINGS AND DOCTRINES OF THE ANCIENT RELIGIONS HAVE BEEN CORRUPTED. IGNORE THEM. THE EXERCISES, SUCH AS THOSE IN HATHA AND KUNDALINI YOGA, BREATHING EXERCISES, MARTIAL ARTS EXERCISES, ETC., THESE ARE ANOTHER MATTER AND THEY ARE VERY POWERFUL IN RAISING THE SO-CALLED WITCHPOWER, VRIL, CHI. THIS IS THE ESSENCE OF SATANISM.

In Normandy, France in summer of 2001 a similar reaserch called "100-Day Tum-mo" was carried out. Some information could be find here: Mind controls body in extreme experiments (The Harvard Gazette) or here: 100-Day Tum-mo Meditation Research in Normandy by Loel Guinness, Kalpa Group. My question is, does anyone know if any footage from that research is publicly available online?

Let me know what you think.

I think because they expand there Sushumna, the energy that normally flows through rises. This as a byproduct produces more heat.

The same could be done by absorbing enough off the fire element and retaining it (take the warnings on the JOS site about it serious).

Definitely, it has been stated multiple times by a various sources that the heat production is just a byproduct and the ceremony of drying wet sheets is just a way of verifying the proficiency of the inner practice. It's also worth stating how extreme conditions are present during such test. A scientific paper Neurocognitive and Somatic Components of Temperature Increases during g-Tummo Meditation: Legend and Reality says:

(...) this ceremony is held annually, at dawn, and all of the experienced practitioners walk slowly for a few hours around the nunnery complex in −25°C to −30°C weather, wearing only short skirts and shoes and a wet sheet draped around their naked torsos.

I think it's even more extreme to what a video I shared shows. To anyone interested the above quote is about Gebchak nunnery and you can read about Chu-Rey (Wet Sheet) here - Tibetan New Year 2011, here - Happy New Year 2018 and here - Happy ‘Losar’ Year of the Water Rabbit (although not much).

The JoS page Meditation to Produce Heat states that in order to generate heat one has to:

While in a trance, visualize the sushumna expanding to the spine in either a red hot or white hot glowing light. Focus on this for several minutes and from there, expand it beyond the spine, again, focus for several minutes and then expand it 2 inches beyond the spine. Keep expanding until you are several feet or more beyond your physical body.

Here comes the question is it the same as what Tibetans call 'G-tummo' meditation. The previously aforementioned scientific paper sheds some light onto the matter:

Two types of g-tummo practice

The g-tummo practice is characterized by a special breathing technique, “the vase”, accompanied by isometric muscle contractions, where after inhalation, during a period of holding their breath (apnea), the practitioners contract both abdominal and pelvic muscles so that the protruding lower belly takes the shape of a vase or pot [1].

Oral tradition, as confirmed by our extensive interviews with g-tummo practitioners, differentiates between at least two main types of g-tummo practice, Forceful Breath (FB) and Gentle Breath (GB). These types of g-tummo practice differ not only in terms of the breathing technique involved, but also in their goals and the content of visualization. Although both FB and GB are based on the “vase” breathing technique, FB is forceful and vigorous, while GB is gentle and without any strain. Whereas the goal of FB is to raise “psychic heat”, the goal of GB is to maintain it. During FB, attention is focused on visualizing a rising flame that starts below the navel and with each breath rises up to the crown of the head, whereas GB is accompanied by visualization of the entire body being filled with a surging sensation of bliss and heat. It is physically difficult for practitioners to use the complex FB technique for extended periods of time or while walking around; therefore it is GB that is used during the ceremony of drying wet sheets.

Based on that description both, the JoS and Tibetan meditation, seems to be similar although 'G-tummo' has some extra elements like specific form of breathing (Pranayama), muscle contraction (I believe these are Bandhas) and hand positions (Mudras) as seen below:

Also artistic representation of "G-tummo" is quite revealing:

If anyone has some more information or maybe disagree then let me know.

Great to see that Buddhism couldn't destroy all ancient practices and some of them remained as "top secrets".
