YouTuber PewDiePie rescinded a $50,000 donation to the Anti-Defamation League on Thursday in an apparent move to appease a subset of far-right fans—complicating his continued efforts to rehabilitate his image after he had been tied to the alt-right.

PewDiePie, whose name is Felix Kjellberg, said it didn’t “feel genuine” going forward with a $50,000 donation to the ADL, an organization combating anti-Semitism, he had announced just days earlier.

He didn’t offer specific criticisms of the ADL, only that he “didn’t know a lot of things that surfaced throughout this whole thing about the charity that doesn’t fit at all.”

In a now deleted tweet, Kjellberg said the donation “doesn’t make sense to everyone, especially since they’ve outright spoken against me”—referencing a 2017 incident when anti-Semitic posts on his Youtube channel brought criticism from the ADL and lost him a business deal with Disney.

Fans on 4Chan started a (largely anti-Semitic) conspiracy theory that he was being controlled or blackmailed into making the donation.
In a statement, the ADL told Forbes that it has not received any direct communication from Kjellberg beyond his public posts. “ADL learned about the potential donation from Felix Kjellberg when everyone else did: when he made the announcement on his channel earlier this week.”

Social network Gab, which has been criticized for harboring white nationalists, replied to Kjellberg’s video on twitter saying that donating to the ADL “wouldn’t have stopped them or anyone else from claiming you are ‘alt right’” and claimed the organization works “tirelessly to pressure Big Tech companies to silence dissent.”

Crucial quote: Kjellberg said in the video announcing the decision, “I made the mistake of picking a charity that I was advised, instead of picking a charity I’m personally passionate about” as a way to “put an end to these alt-right claims that have been thrown against me.”

Key background: PewDiePie has come under fire for saying the n-word in a gaming stream (he apologized), for featuring anti-Semitic imagery in videos and for having a sizable white nationalist fanbase. The Christchurch shooter said in a livestream “subscribe to PewDiePie” before he went on to kill 51 people.

What’s next: Kjellberg said he will donate the $50,000 to another organization but did not say whether it would be one that fights anti-Semitism.

PewDiePie’s agent did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Forbes.

Looks like the kikes aren't getting their shekels tonight, guys. Job well done. Keep up the RTRs, I'll certainly do my part as well in that regard.
